Governor's Office Proves Water Underuse Claim

For many years magnetic flow meters have been the benchmark technology for measuring liquid flow. Ideal for applications where low pressure drop and low maintenance are required, they have, however, demonstrated serious limitations when it comes to measuring non-conductive liquids, distilled water and many non-aqueous solutions. Recognizing the industry need, Sierra developed their Innova-Sonic Flow Meter to counter these shortcomings. Capable of accurately measuring (within 0.5% of reading) any clean liquid, Sierra’s patented Innova-Sonic technology made it possible to measure down to zero flow.

In 1998, Pennsylvania’s Governor established the Governor’s Green Government Council to help embed environmental sustainability throughout its policymaking and operational processes. Its mandate was to operate opportunistically, nurturing champions where it found them in targeted areas. In early 2006, Bob Workosky, a sales representative for Sierra products in South Hampton, Pennsylvania saw an enormous opportunity in water management. During late 2005 and early 2006, the Governor’s mansion in Harrisburg stood largely empty. During that period of time, the local water utility measured significant water use. When questioned, the utility stood by their measurements. Meeting with one of the Governor’s GGGC representatives at a public presentation, Bob recommended using Sierra’s Innova-Sonic 205 Meter as a way to more precisely determine usage. They liked what they heard and agreed to the experiment. Within a half hour of arriving at the Governor’s mansion, Bob had clamped on the Sierra flow meter without disturbing their current metering system and initiated flow measurement. Within 30 days, the Innova-Sonic’s highly accurate sensors reported and validated a discrepancy of 20,000 gallons. Those results were later verified by a third party audit. With the efficient use of natural resources being one of their highest priorities, the state of Pennsylvania is now looking at a plan to monitor water usage with Sierra meters statewide.

Innova-Sonic® Model 205 Clamp-on Liquid Flow Meter
A NEMA 4X (IP65) non-invasive transit-time ultrasonic digital flow meter for the detection of volumetric flow rate of most liquids.

Innova-Sonic® Model 210i Portable Liquid Flow Meter
A non-invasive portable transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter for the detection of the volumetric flow rate of most liquids.

Innova-Sonic® Model 205 Insertion Liquid Flow Meter
A transit-time ultrasonic digital flow meter featuring insertion transducers that can be used on pipe sizes ranging from 2" to 400" (50mm-10000mm). The key benefit is the high signal strength achieved by using insertion transducers so that pipe wall, pipe liner, and pipe wall deposits do not affect instrument performance.
