To help you comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emission rule (40 CFR part 98), Sierra offers several certified GHG emissions reduction flowmeters that calculate CO2-equivalent emissions.
The EPA’s compulsory reporting requirements that govern GHG production – implemented in January 2010 – are aimed at U.S. companies that release more than 25,000 tons per year of CO2 equivalent. Each Sierra Green house Gas flowmeter meets EPA requirements, and the technology provides an accurate, economical method to measure methane or natural gas burned and assess emission of carbon dioxide.
Sierra has extensive experience in producing gas flow meters for methane (CH4), as well as N20, SF6, HFCs and PFCs, which are also included in the EPA mandate.
In response to this new challenge facing our customers, Sierra has certified several meters ideal for GHG measurement meeting all requirements defined by the new EPA rule. Look for our GHG Certified logo throughout the site to identify our GHG flow meters.

![]() | Boiler-Trak™ Smart Insertion Gas Flow Meter Stationary Combustion (commercial boilers, kilns and heaters) are among the largest emitters of CO2. Developed in 2007 as a fuel measurement solution for the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, Boiler-Trak™ meets all of the requirements called out for a stationary combustion fuel meter. To date, over 15,000 units have been successfully installed measuring methane, propane and natural gas. |

![]() | Steel-Mass™ Model 640S Insertion Mass Flow Meter Landfill gas, the second largest source of CO2, is very humid, at low pressure (20 - 40 mBarg) and about 40-60°C (100F) when it leaves the landfill. The low pressure and dirty gas make differential pressure (DP) devices like orifice plates unsuitable, while the variable flows require a large turndown. Sierra’s Steel-Mass™ Model 640S Insertion Mass Flow Meter is ideal for this application since it boasts a 100:1 turndown, has no moving parts, and generates nominal pressure drop across the immersible sensor probe. |

With its built-in Duel-Plate flow conditioning element, the 780S is an ideal meter for measuring gas flow in cramped or constrained piping environments where long straight pipe runs simply do not exist. The Model 780S is routinely used by gas and power plants to measure methane to compressors, pre-heaters, boilers and other process equipment. |

Other Sierra Solutions for Clean Energy Applications
All of Sierra’s thermal mass flow meters measure mass flow directly without pressure or temperature compensation, have at least a 100:1 turndown, contain no moving parts, exhibit nominal pressure drop and are easy to install. Sierra has a proven installed base in the measurement of fixed combustion fuel and landfill gas, the two largest source categories in 40 CFR part 98, and routinely supplies many types of gas mass flow meters to the gas production and electrical generation sectors (the two next-largest contributors) measuring the full list of greenhouse gases.
