Mass Flow Meters

Precision Measurement for All Gas, Liquid and Steam Applications

Sierra designs and manufactures a wide range of gas mass flowmeters across three core technologies: capillary thermal, immersible thermal, and vortex technology:
  • Capillary and MEMS thermal mass flow meters deliver accurate direct mass flow ideal for research & industrial applications typically with lower flow rates.
  • Immersible thermal mass flow meters give accurate direct gas mass flow measurement from low to high flows for compressed air, natural gas, N2 and methane to name a few in a variety of industrial applications.
  • Mass vortex is ideal for steam and saturated steam applications, but it can also measure gas and volumetric water.
Choose your capillary thermal, immersible thermal or mass vortex flowmeter below.

Capillary Thermal Meters

For research and general industry, our SmartTrak line of gas flowmeters and gas mass flow controllers (MFCs) offers direct mass flow measurement with the largest breadth of products: multi-gas, high pressure, low pressure drop, ability to measure corrosives, and small footprint.

Immersible Thermal Mass Flow Meters

How much compressed air are you producing and using? Is your boiler operating as efficiently as possible? What’s your natural gas flow rate? For effective flow energy management applications, like compressed air and natural gas measurement, thermal mass flow meters give you the answers with the highest accuracy +/- 0.5% of reading, stable Dry Sense sensor technology, in situ field calibration, and software app to easily integrate across all platforms.

We offer localized and global support, commissioning, and lifetime support for all of our gas flow metersLearn More

Vortex Flow Meters

Sierra’s mass vortex flow meters can be specified to measure up to five process variables with one process connection: volumetric flow, mass flow, density, pressure, and temperature. Vortex technology is ideal for steam flow measurement and volumetric water. Available in both inline and insertion versions, with easy hot tap feature for large steam pipes. Software apps make it easy to set up and tune your meter for your application.

FAQs

Q: What is mass flow?

A: In most processes with flowing gases such as air, N2, or methane, it is gas mass—not gas volume—that is the critical variable. Volumetric flow measurements are less reliable than mass flow measurements because changes in gas temperature and pressure will change the density of a fixed volume of gas.

In the control process, additional errors can be propagated by back pressure changes in the process. Unlike orifice plates, rotameters, variable area (VA) meters, differential pressure (DP) meters, turbine meters and all other volumetric flow devices, thermal mass flow meters and controllers are relatively immune to changes in inlet temperature and pressure. Since these instruments directly measure molecular flow (count gas molecules), they provide the most reliable, repeatable and accurate method for delivering gases from a supply volume to a process at a desired mass flow rate.

Q: How does a capillary thermal mass flowmeter work?

A: The total flow through a tube or piping system enters the CTFM, where it passes through a Laminar Flow Element (LFE). This creates a pressure drop across it, and in turn, a small amount of flow, typically in the sccm range, is fractioned off of the total flow and passes through the capillary flow sensor. With a good LFE, this ratio of flow through the sensor and flow through the LFE remains constant.

Q: How do I size my vortex flowmeter?

A: To properly configure your vortex flowmeter, you need to know type of fluid; type of gas, liquid or steam; pipe size, including type, nominal size and schedule; process conditions, such as flow rate, temperature and pressure. Use our InnovaMass sizing tool to configure your vortex flowmeter today.

Q: What is mass flow rate?

A: Simply put, the mass flow rate is the WEIGHT of the sample, while the volumetric flow rate is the SIZE of the sample.
